Sacramento -- home of Tower Records, founded by Russ Solomon in his dad's drugstore, and now among America's largest music retailers -- puts its own California capital city spin on shopping. Downtown's Old Sacramento Historic District, bordered by the Sacramento River and Interstate-5, features more than 125 boutiques for souvenirs to home décor on a boardwalk running past Gold Rush-era buildings with restaurants, clubs, and museums. Westfield Shoppingtown - Downtown Plaza, between 4th & 7th and J & L streets, serves as the capital's open-air shopping, dining and entertainment destination, anchored by Macy's with a Hard Rock Café, Morton's, the Steakhouse, and more than 100 specialty shops. Arden Fair, Sacramento's largest shopping center anchored by Nordstrom, Macy's, JCPenney and Sears, has more than 150 specialty shops and restaurants for casual to fine dining.

Pavilions, with its village atmosphere, ranks as Sacramento's fashion specialty center, including Chico's, Sharper Image, Mace's, Hamilton Jewelers, and Talbots. Folsom Premium Outlets, at the Folsom Boulevard exit, has more than 80 name brand outlets including Off 5th Saks Fifth Avenue, Gap, Kenneth Cole, Guess, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger. Vacaville Premium Outlets has 120 name brand outlets from Ann Taylor Factory Store, and Gap Outlet to Movado Company Store and Restoration Hardware. Nimbus Winery Mall, also on Folsom Boulevard, couples one-of-a-kind specialty shops with a quartet of restaurants, the Old Spaghetti Factory, The Cellar Café, Cattlemens, and Garbeau's Dinner Theatre.
